Bio Sketch

Maya Lyubenova is a photographer and writer. Her haiku have appeared in numerous leading haiku journals and won several awards, including WHA Master Haiga Artist (2009), First Prize in the 2nd Bulgarian Haiku Contest (2009), Third Prize in The 17th Kusamakura International Haiku Competition (2012), and Honorable Mention in the 2nd Genjuan International Haibun Contest (2013). Her book, Flecks of Blue, was published in 2010.

  1. Technically speaking, L3, with "light," provides a "scent link" to L1, "herring" clouds (clouds that appear streaked)[note: herring: a "silvery fish" that is most abundant in coastal waters and is of great commercial importance as a food fish in many parts of the world]

    And the emotionally effective juxtaposition of two visually resonant images lifts the poem up a notch.
